Baby Steps and Toddler Explorers

The most important feature of The Merit School Baby Steps and Toddler Explorer program is the nurturing, and safe environment we offer to your children between the ages of three weeks through 24 months.

Our Merit School caregivers reinforce the warmth, security and love your child is used to receiving at home.  And that relationship extends to the child’s parent and family members.

Our infant and toddler teachers support infants and toddlers curiosity with safe places to practice new skills through exploration and discovery. Infants and toddlers also develop self-awareness and independence through the use of daily routines.

Distinctives of our Baby Steps Program:

Primary Care

An infant’s needs in the first year of life require caregivers who are warm, dedicated and attentive.  Healthy development is fostered in a trusting relationship established between each child and the primary caregiver.  This loving, responsive teacher strives to be in tune with each infant's unique cues and needs and works in partnership with the family to ensure consistent care. Through gentle words and warm, engaging, individual attention a trusting reciprocal relationship is formed

Individualized Learning

Caregivers design a weekly activity plan for each child.  Colorful pictures, puppets, stories, and engaging songs and rhymes encourage the child's physical, intellectual and emotional growth. This supportive relationship provides the foundation for social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. Programming considers the child’s temperament and disposition and is adaptive to each child’s needs.

Parent Communication

A report is sent home each evening with information concerning the child's activities, meals, naps, diaper changes and overall disposition.  Parent conferences are conducted twice a year. However, parents are always welcome and encouraged to visit and discuss their child's progress. We collaborate closely with parents to ensure their infant develops a healthy sense of trust, is stimulated by his activities, and is surrounded by a sense of security and love.

Supportive Environments

Appealing furnishings are thoughtfully arranged throughout each classroom creating a home-like environment. Softly upholstered gliders provide a place for teachers to cuddle an infant or read a favorite storybook. Specialized equipment and materials are situated at the infant’s level.

Day Care and Early Education Programs for Toddler Exlorers

Distinctives of our Toddler Program:

Primary Care

Warm and nurturing environments welcome toddlers and their families. Attachment relationships are fostered through the use of primary care in which one teacher cares for a small ratio of children. The primary caregiver is assigned to each child and is responsible for the child's daily care, as well as his/her weekly educational program. The caregiver selects activities that will enhance the child's language, intellectual and emotional development and his/her large and small motor skills.

Individualized Learning

Individualized lesson plans are developed for toddlers by our teaching professionals specializing in early care and development. This supportive relationship provides the foundation for social-emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. Programming considers the child’s temperament and disposition and is adaptive to each child’s needs.

Parent Communication

A daily report is provided to parents, which highlights the important events of their child’s day including care and feeding schedules. This enhances the opportunity to create a special connection with each child and their family.  Parent conferences are scheduled in the fall and spring. However, parents are encouraged to visit the toddlers' classroom and observe their child learning and having fun.

Supportive Environments

Appealing furnishings are thoughtfully arranged throughout each classroom creating a home-like environment.  Specialized equipment and materials are situated at the child’s level to offer toddlers the opportunity to choose activities that match their interests and abilities. Family photos are posted in the classroom and children’s work is celebrated and on display. Specially designed outdoor play spaces for toddlers provide areas to explore and connect with nature.
